So the All Blacks have had a 25 man training squad this week. I'm wondering what the selection policy has been. Amongst the 25 there was no room for any Magpies players, yet 11 of the 25 are from the unions of Auckland, North Harbour, & Otago. None of these 3 sides were even in the playoffs!! Surely a team that had a close loss to Canterbury in the semis is worthy of at least one All Black selection!? Category: World Sports New Zealand's Greatest Sporting Day?August 18, 2008 4:45 am
New Zealand had one of it's greatest sporting days in history on our Saturday. To start the night of the New Zealand Warriors won the rugby league against the higher ranked Cronulla Sharks to send us into the 8th playoff spot for the first time this season. Then we won Bronze through a fantastic effort by three-time world champion in the mens single sculls by Mahe Drysdale. He lost 4kg throughout the week, and was so sick he shouldn't have even been racing, yet he turned up and only lost the race because he started to feel the effects of his illness in the last 150m. So sad but so proud. Then gold by 0.01s (a la Phelps) and bronze in the mens pairs. Later on in the night bad boy Hayden Roulston got the silver in the mens individual pursuit, unexpected but great. Valerie Vili then smashed the competition with a gold medal in the womens shotput. To finish the night off, the All Blacks made history by keeping South Africa scoreless on their own home ground 19-0. No All Blacks side has ever done that and I believe you could count the numbers of total teams in history to do this on one hand. How hard is it to keep South Africa scoreless in South Africa let along even win in South Africa. What a night! Category: General Air NZ CupAugust 12, 2008 4:17 pm
Wow- after 2 rounds, these standings look a wee bit skewed. BOP in second!? Waikato last, followed by Harbour!? i'm hoping we might see some normality return to the results this weekend. I'll be at McLean Park on Saturday evening to see the Magpies destroy Southland. I say most of the winners this round should be pretty predictable. The Auckland v Canterbury match on Saturday should be a a thriller. Now about the changes the NZRU are making- quit tinkering!! choose a competition format and stick with it. make promotion/relegation automatic instead of a playoff match. i'm suggesting this because i'm sick of hearing all the whinging from the likes of northland. northland (along with a lot of other unions) have to realise that we simply can't have all 27 provinces in one division. surprisingly, this means that some of you have to drop down a grade. if the NZRU made promotion/relegation automatic between divisions, we wouldn't have the risk of weaker unions being trapped in the lower divisions (as happened to Hawke's Bay for 12 years!). go back to 3 divisions of 8-10 teams each. i know this sounds eerily similar to the old NPC, but that's because for the most part, it worked! there was automatic promotion/relegation between 2nd & 3rd divisions, & when East Coast & North Otago won the 3rd division titles, they both made a good go of their first season in 2nd division. NZRU, you've made a mess- fix it!!! NZRU- the mess is NOT the Ranfurly Shield- don't you dare try to fix that!! leave it alone!! rugby is already dwindling in this country, without you guys ballsing it up even further!!
